STATEMENT FOR INTENT FOR MATHS

At Purbrook Junior School, we are passionate about maths and the opportunities it can bring to all of our children.

INTENT: Why do we teach this? Why do we teach it in the way we do?

Our intent is to provide exciting learning opportunities that enable all our children to enjoy maths so that they become confident mathematicians equipped with a range of independent learning strategies to enable them to succeed. In our lessons, we focus on three core skills: fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

Fluency: We aim for children to become fluent in maths through varied and frequent practise so that pupils develop conceptual understanding together with the ability to recall and apply mathematical knowledge rapidly and accurately. We are responsive to the needs of each pupil and, when required, make provision for additional teaching time before moving on to the next part of the learning journey.

Reasoning and problem solving:  Using rich questions and discussions, we will ensure that children enjoy challenging maths. We will actively support our children in developing their reasoning skills so that they can problem solve by applying their maths knowledge to a variety of problems and break down problems into smaller steps to seek solutions.

Our current Mathematics leader(s) are: Mrs K Barnes and Mrs S Finch
