At Purbrook Junior School, our geography curriculum inspires curiosity about the world and helps pupils understand the relationship between people, places, and the environment. Through an enquiry-based approach, children explore their local area before extending their learning to national and global contexts. Each year builds progressively on prior knowledge, developing a strong understanding of both human and physical geography. Pupils study a wide range of themes including settlements, trade, rivers, natural hazards, climate change, biodiversity, sustainability, and global ecosystems. These topics help children understand how human activity impacts the planet and why informed, sustainable choices matter. Learning is enriched through fieldwork, local studies, outdoor learning, visits, visitors, and cross-curricular links. Children develop key geographical skills including map reading, data collection and analysis, fieldwork, and the use of digital and physical resources. High-quality geographical vocabulary is taught and revisited to support confident communication.

By the time pupils leave Purbrook Junior School, they have a strong sense of place, an understanding of global and environmental issues, and the skills to think critically about the world around them. They leave as confident, curious geographers, equipped to contribute positively to a sustainable future.

“Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future. What could be more important than that?” Michael Palin, 2007.
